First day of winter: care tips for houseplants

“The Plant Project” shares the importance of owning a plant and how to take care of it
HOUSTON (KIAH) – With the first day of winter, come cooler temperatures. A local business shares tips on how to take care of houseplants when the seasons change.
A store called “The Plant Project” is located in Montrose Houston. It was created to celebrate community, culture and plants.
I wanted people to feel like they were walking into their friend’s house. In their family’s house. And they are getting closer to this passion.
Bree Iman Clarke, Founder and Creator of The Plant Project Houston
The factory project started in Dallas, Texas, and then expanded to Houston. Founder and designer Bree Clarke says she is the first black woman to own a plant store in the city of Dallas.
Clarke says she wanted to create a unique experience for each customer. Each shop is located in a small house which it transforms into a business.
âWhenever people walk inside, the first thing I tell them⦠whatever plant you like is your plant. And you just don’t understand that when you go to a big box store. So this intimate setting in a small store is what we want, âClarke said.
As outdoor temperatures change, Clarke offers these winter care tips for plant owners:
âYou want to make sure you’re without water in the winter. Because all the moisture is retained in the plant. Of course, it’s colder. Then it dries up less with the sun and all that. Also, moving away from the windows. So they don’t get as much as this draft, âClarke said.
If you are looking to become a “plant mother” or a “father” this winter, The Plant Project will help you find the right one for you. The organization provides care advice and helps you create a schedule.
In Clarke’s words, âyou have to get yourself a plant that fits your lifestyle. And that’s why I think the Plant Project is perfect for you because you have this 101. â
Clarke encourages everyone to have at least one plant in their house. She says they are more than just decoration. Plants are therapy. They can help with anxiety and depression.
âThe plants feel good. They are more than plants. The power of plants is simply amazing. When you walk in, the oxygen⦠it improves your mood. You breathe more easily. It’s kind of like, it drops the stuff that you have going on, âClarke said.
For starters, the Plants Project recommends three easy-to-care plants: Monstera, Pothos, and Snake Plant.
