Healthy tips to fuel a life on the fast lane
We often look to celebrities when it comes to health and fitness. When Angelina Jolie announced in 2013 that she had had a double mastectomy after testing positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation, referrals for the mutation doubled within two months. Likewise, when Jade Goody went public in 2008 with her cervical cancer diagnosis, attendance for cervical screenings jumped 70%.
Between Gwyneth Paltrow’s health brand Goop, Jennifer Aniston’s yoga practices, J Lo’s drinking water, and Meghan Markle’s avocado toast, there are plenty of daily practices that are also taken from the famous one.
We spoke to four top Irish people about the first thing they do to stay healthy.
“Since the first lockdown started, because I was home every morning with the boys, we got into the habit of making a smoothie every day. I am really surprised to have continued. being going out early and wouldn’t even have breakfast. I would have coffee and not eat until the afternoon, which is such a bad habit, but it was just my routine, ”says businesswoman and mom of two Pippa O’Connor Ormand.
“When the boys were younger, I was probably running on adrenaline all the time. I spoiled them by making them things like fruit salads throughout the day, but I wasn’t doing the same for myself so I made changes myself in terms of eating.
“For the past year, literally every morning, I’ve made myself some sort of green or berry smoothie and I feel all the better. I’ve had my daily fix and everything that follows is a bonus.”
The founder of POCO usually puts spinach, coconut water, pineapple, bananas, flax seeds or avocados in her smoothies. When it comes to her sons, Ollie (8) and Louis (4), she can’t be so inventive with the mixer.
“They wouldn’t be as adventurous as me with all the greens, but I slip some spinach in theirs and put some strawberries or honey in there too. I will also use Weetabix or oats. Louis can be a bit hit and miss with breakfast so I feel better at least knowing he’s having the smoothie. “
To make sure she’s properly prepared, Pippa buys the ingredients in bulk at her weekly shop. “There are so many things you can just have in the freezer, like spinach. You just need to make a conscious effort. When you go to the supermarket, keep yourself as well as the family in mind, ”she says.
“It’s something simple, but it made a huge difference to my energy and my skin. It combined with drinking at least two liters of water a day. I was on the go so often and had coffee and then I could have another one and before I knew it it was 2pm and I realized that I hadn’t been drinking any water. It’s so easy to do. “
When it comes to staying mentally and physically fit, Pippa takes her bike. “I don’t do an exercise class or anything like that, never really did, but I walk at least three times a week and had a bike last year and I really like it. It’s probably the main thing I do for my head, “she says.
“I think we’ve all received a little whistle since the pandemic hit. We re-evaluated and so many better habits came out of it. It definitely taught me that I don’t have to rush all over the place. I can still be productive in a smarter way – and have breakfast. ”
For blogger and entrepreneur Rosie Connolly, training is her number one priority to stay healthy in mind and body. Her favorite methods are running, weight training, and yoga.
“The first thing for me is to train at least two to three times a week and want to take my steps every day,” says the 30-year-old. She is a huge fan of fitness trackers and finds her own Fitbit device helps her stay on the move.
“It motivates me and it also encourages me to move at night. Whether it’s a run, weights or yoga, it’s just important for me to move.
Staying active also helps Rosie improve her mental health. Between launching her clothing brand 4th Arq, working on collaborations and caring for her son Harry (6), daughter Remi (2) and stepson Reuben (8), life can get stressful.
“I never really understood the connection between exercise and mental health until recently, but for me, exercise is about keeping my head clear and ready for the busy lifestyle I lead. No matter how I feel, I always feel clearer in my mind once I have worked, ”she says. “Without taking time for myself each week, I feel like I wouldn’t be able to cope with the daily stresses of life as well.
“You don’t have to complicate things. A 15-minute walk is all it takes to boost your endorphins and clear your head. ”
Architect andStar Hugh Wallace finds that eating between certain hours works best for his diet.
“I only eat from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and drink at least three liters of water a day. I hate breakfast. I get up and just have coffee. in the morning, “the 64-year-old said.
“If I feel like I want to eat something before lunch, I might have a handful of nuts or an apple and I have a chicken salad or a simple wrap at 12 o’clock.” Because the belly rests for a while, I have never hungry before. “
For dinner, he goes looking for seasonal vegetables and fish from his local fishmonger.
“I make sure I eat lots of fresh vegetables. I’m trying to cut down on the amount of meat I eat and also started eating a lot more fish because I found a good fishmonger in Rathmines. It has fresh hake and cod, it’s great to put on a hot barbecue. I also love barbecued vegetables: eggplant, zucchini, peppers, ”says Hugh.
“At a weird point, I give up and grab some chocolate bars, or I could be really mean and have a slice of HB Raspberry Ripple.”
“It’s important to find whatever you can be consistent with. It’s better to do something 80% continuously rather than 100% for a day or a week, ”says fitness guru Rob Lipsett.
“Mine is doing a resistance training session every day and going for a walk outside. I am not always consistent with my diet, but exercise is something that I am consistent with. It’s like my daily meditation.
“I get up on my laptop and work out in the morning and organize an afternoon gym session to add to the routine. I can lose track of time and be all over the place, so planning a workout helps. I don’t push it seven days a week. Some days I will take things easier than others, but it is essential for me to do this exercise.
“The things I do to stay healthy are different from others, but that’s the beauty of fitness. Everyone has their preferences and what might work for one person might not work for another, but you have to. always keep an open mind to the approaches of others. “
Walking outdoors in particular helps Rob improve his mental health, and he urges everyone to take the time to get outside whenever they can to relax.
“Health is not just about the gym. There is a huge gap between mental and physical health. The two are so closely related in my opinion. I always say there is no point in being the richest person in the cemetery. Health is more important than money, work, anything. It should be number one in life. “
