Incompetent Cervix: Symptoms, Risk Factors, Complications, Tips to Prevent It | Health
Before conceiving, the cervix or the lower part of the uterus that opens to the vagina is closed and firm. As you become pregnant, the cervix tends to soften, shorten (fade) and open (dilate).
If one has an incompetent cervix, the cervix may start to open too soon, leading to premature birth. Incompetent cervix or cervical insufficiency is seen due to weak cervical tissue, which can lead to premature birth or pregnancy loss.
It is difficult to diagnose and treat an incompetent cervix. If your cervix opens early or you have a history of cervical insufficiency, your doctor will prescribe medication for you during pregnancy as well as regular ultrasounds or a procedure done to close the cervix with strong sutures which is cervical cerclage.
Symptoms of Cervical Incompetence:
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Surabhi Siddhartha, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Kharghar Maternity Hospital, said, “The signs and symptoms of cervical incompetence are pelvic pressure, back pain, abdominal cramps, vaginal discharge and even light vaginal bleeding.
According to Dr. Surabhi Siddhartha, a person with whiplash injury can suffer from this condition. She revealed: ‘You will be shocked to learn that certain surgical procedures used to treat cervical abnormalities linked to an abnormal Pap smear can increase the risk of cervical insufficiency. Additionally, uterine abnormalities and genetic disorders affecting the type of fibrous protein that makes up your body’s connective tissues (collagen) can also lead to an incompetent cervix. Short cervical length, previous miscarriage, multiple pregnancies, late abortion, uterine abnormalities and abnormalities, and exposure to diethylstilboestrol (DES), a synthetic form of the hormone estrogen, can also lead to cervical incompetence.
Dr. Surabhi Siddhartha pointed out, “Those with a short cervix, with or without funnel or insufficiency, are more likely to deliver prematurely than women whose cervix remains long, firm and thick throughout their pregnancy. In addition, there may also be pregnancy loss.
Tips to prevent cervical incompetence:
Emphasizing that treatment will vary from woman to woman, Dr. Surabhi Siddhartha advised, “Along with proper treatment and bed rest, certain foolproof measures should be followed. Prenatal visits will allow you to monitor your health and that of your baby. Eat a healthy diet loaded with folic acid, calcium, iron, and other essential nutrients. Avoid smoking, alcohol and illicit drugs to stay fit during pregnancy. Take charge of your health. Don’t ignore any symptoms like vaginal bleeding, abdominal cramps, and back pain.
