Officers credited with catching child abductor, rescuing AMBER Alert children spotted at hotel – Crime Online
Two Texas police officers have been credited with rescuing two children who were allegedly kidnapped and nearly disappeared without a trace last year, reports KLTV.
On Friday, the Kilgore Police Department issued congratulations to Lt. Joey Chitwood and Cpl. Joey Johnston in honor of how they handled the case.
A woman had informed authorities that she believed she had seen an abducted child who was the subject of an AMBER alert at a Walmart in Kilgore, Texas, located between Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana.
On a hunch, officers drove to a nearby hotel near Interstate 20.
“Using their intuition, they thought the kidnapper may have stayed in Kilgore that night and wanted to check hotels before departure time,” the police department wrote in a Facebook post. “They immediately drove to Motel 6 off I-20 and immediately saw the kidnapper loading the car to leave.”
At the time, law enforcement believed the suspect was armed and forcibly abducted two children, aged 11 and 10.
Chitwood and Johnston took quick action to arrest the suspect, then removed the children from his car for protection.
“God only knows how they picked the right hotel first (maybe they were guided),” a Facebook post read. “A minute later, and the suspect is on I-20. We know their quick actions ended this kidnapping.
The city’s mayor, city manager and police chief signed the congratulations.
“We congratulate them on a fantastic job,” reads Facebook.
As of Monday, the post had received nearly 800 likes and over 100 comments.
“Good on this citizen for being so alert and ACTING accordingly,” wrote one commenter. “And for those officers, quick thinking and action.”
