Personal Health and Fitness for College Students – The Etownian
Being healthy and having a successful fitness journey can sometimes be difficult. This can be especially difficult for students who are constantly struggling with rigorous schedules of classes, internships, jobs, clubs and social lives. However, there are countless benefits that flow from a healthy lifestyle for college students.
The benefits include improved mood and better overall mental sensation, in addition to having more energy and better focus. Being healthy and fit also helps people feel better physically. Above all, a healthy lifestyle focused on physical fitness helps people live longer and have fewer health problems than unhealthy people who are less active.
In addition to simply finding time to exercise and focus on their health, many students are given unlimited amounts of unhealthy foods and snacks in their dining halls. Eating good food with reasonable portions is a big part of healthy living. Keeping track of what you eat and eating a balanced diet can be difficult, but will pay off in the long run.
The next important step in being healthy and fit is daily exercise or physical activity. Many people think that this means running several miles or lifting heavy weights, but it doesn’t have to be that intense.
“Our campus has a beautiful walking trail that not many people know about … a lot of people think working out must be a tough thing, but it really isn’t,” Bowers Center Group Fitness Instructor for Sports, Fitness and Well-being says Darcy Ott. “I started training just by taking my mom for a walk. “
There are many forms of exercise that can benefit both physical and mental health. “I like to run because it’s a great way to relax after my homework at the end of the day. It also helps me relieve stress because I’m going out and being active, ”said sophomore Ashley Burger.
No matter where someone is, with healthy habits of eating well and staying active, anyone can begin their journey to a healthy, fit lifestyle.
