Tips for preparing affordable and healthy school meals
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) — The time and planning it takes to pack a school lunch may tempt you to send your child off with the lunch money.
“The thing about lunch, you want them to have the energy to get through the rest of the day,” said Marcia Pell, registered dietitian nutritionist.
Pell says there are easy and economical ways to prepare a healthy meal at home!
“I sort of think of it as a budget,” Pell said. “You must first do what is necessary. Along with lunches, these will be the food groups that nourish your child.
First, avoid pre-packaged foods.
“You’re paying for this convenience,” Pell said. “Some things aren’t that hard to do yourself, you can slice your own cheese.”
Consider buying in bulk.
“It will probably be cheaper to buy a larger container,” Pell said. “And if it’s something you can use in about a week, it’ll save you money.”
“If you have leftovers for dinner, you can just while you’re cleaning up, put them in a container,” Pell said.
Another money-saving tip is to buy groceries at affordable stores like the Dollar Store.
“See what you can buy at the Dollar Store,” Pell said. “I got this at Dollar General. Most times it’s cheaper to get healthy food at the dollar store.
When you buy produce, you don’t have to buy organic.
“When things are in season it’s usually a better price, you don’t have to buy organic and spend extra money that way,” Pell said.
Use reusable Tupperware.
“Fill it with a variety of healthy foods, then just wash it in the dishwasher,” Pell said. “So you don’t buy baggies all the time. It’s also good for the environment. »
